PROJECTS AT THE PERMANENT BOOKSHOP

In addition to selling books at our primary location of Permanent Gallery, we encourage the production and the appreciation of bookworks through various forms of project-work.

The bookshop’s regular activities include;

These activities are documented in our online photo-journal.

WORKING WITH ARTISTS TO PRODUCE EXHIBITIONS AND EVENTS AT PERMANENT GALLERY AND ELSEWHERE

The Permanent Bookshop works with artists, publishing collectives, curators and collectors to produce book-related exhibitions and events in Brighton and elsewhere. Artists that we have worked with recently include Mark Pawson, David Ferry, Le Gun, Neasden Control Centre, St Pierre & Miquelon (Sexymachinery), Jeff Keen and Ian Helliwell.

WORKING WITH ARTISTS TO PRODUCE BOOKWORKS AND CATALOGUES

The Permanent Bookshop regularly collaborates with artists and artists’ groups to produce one-off bookworks and printed editions. Many of these items are available to purchase from the bookshop.

MANAGING TEMPORARY BOOKSHOPS AT ALTERNATIVE VENUES

As a mobile enterprise, the bookshop travels to alternative venues throughout the UK and Europe, temporarily peddling its wares in each location, before moving on.

The length of time that the bookshop remains in a location can range from less than an hour to several days, with the longest stay (to date) being six weeks. Normally, the bookshop’s presence is as part of a larger exhibition, conference or festival featuring artist-made books. Previous locations have included university galleries and lobbies, cellar bars, artist-run spaces and studios.

The bookshop attempts a curatorial approach to the selling of books by artists, whereby the shop-counter, display shelving and signage is constructed and arranged in relation to the work and activities occurring in the space. The stock is also selected and displayed by these means.

PRESENTATIONS AND WORKSHOPS

The Permanent Bookshop has developed and presented talks and tutorials to students of all ages, both at Permanent Gallery and elsewhere. We also host regular self-publishing salons and workshops at the gallery and alternative venues.
